SPAM Mayo & Stir Fried Kimchi Triangle Kimbap

Size up Triangle Kimbap with SPAM!

I found a big size of Triangle Kimbap that is 30% larger than regular size one.
SPAM with rice could be a little strange combination for non-Korean, but SPAM is very familiar ingredients in here.
Comparison with Normal Triangle Kimbap
Yes, this Triangle Kimbap contains a piece of SPAM that was introduced and made by Homel in 1937 in the United States of America. It is manufactured from the meat of pork shoulder that is leftovers after making ham and is known as the abbreviation of "spiced ham" or "shoulders of pork and ham." Anyhow, during the world war II, it became a military supply for U.S. soldiers, and it was introduced to U.S. Army posts such as Guam, Hawaii, Okinawa, the Philippines, etc.  It also introduced Korea in early 1950's during Korean War.

SPAM is one of popular canned food and people says it is more popular than Coke or KFC in Korea. Fried sliced SPAM is commonly served as side dish with steamed rice at home. It also used in "Budaejjigae", a very popular Korean spicy stew with American sausage, canned bean, Kimchi, rice cake, ramyun, onion, green onion, Korean chili paste, macaroni, tofu, sesame leaves. etc. as well as rolled Kimbap.

Korean has the tradition to give some presents such as thanksgiving and new year to relatives and/or friends. Normally it was meat, fish, or freshly harvested fruits, but after the Korean war, there was not enough stuff, so they gave some SPAM that was from U.S. Army. At the moment it was something new stuff for Korean, and they thought it was more valuable presents. Even nowadays people are giving it as a current and does not think it is cheap stuff. Of course, it is packed in special package and variation of 9 or 12 SPAM or combination with oil.

BBC News reported about its popularity as a title of "Why is SPAM a luxury food in South Korea?"

When I saw it at the store, it reminded me my mom's meal at home with SPAM although she made me sometimes because she did not like it.
